Planning a trip to Hobart in the near future? Well here's a guide to the best places to visit in the darling (and getting colder) city.
1. Bruny Island
Not exactly in the general Hobart area it's roughly a two hour drive out and is one of the most gorgeous places that I have ever visited. Known for it's wildlife and wilderness (as well as it's cheese, wine, fudge, chocolate and oysters) it is a popular tourist destination. The ferry across to Bruny Island starts at 6:30am and is over by 7pm that night with prices ranging from $33 to $110 depending on the size of your vehicle. The Neck, although not the most accomodating of places to travel up when it's windy, is worth the trip with stunning 360 views from the top. There are multiple hikes to go on whilst on the island, some take a few hours and others are only thirty minutes long.
Off the east coast of Tasmania is another island which is easily accessed by ferry. Boasting remarkable wildlife and historic ruins Maria is another island that should not be missed. I spent the weekend camping and relaxing, doing yoga on the beaches with kangaroos and wallabies. The Painted Cliffs walk is an absolute must see, so long as you try it out at low-tide.
3. MONA - Museum of Old and New Art
This funky museum just a little ways out of Hobart is home to some pretty interesting things that should be seen to be believed. On Thursday and Friday evenings MONA hosts "The Golden Hour", an evening of communal eating and drinking where you can "soak up the sunset then retire to the wine bar for some top-notch tucker." MONA also hosts Dark Mofo annually and is a festival (although drenched in controversy this year) that should not be missed!
4. Salamanca Markets
I am sure that anyone who has ever mentioned visiting Hobart has been told to visit the Salamanca Markets. With bustling crowds, food to die for and the rest of Hobart directly at your fingertips it is the perfect place to start a Saturday morning. Between the fresh produce, good coffee's and baked goods (check out Bury Me Standing Coffee Co. for some of the best bagels that I have ever eaten!!)
5. Street Eats Franko
Although out for the year Street Eats is an amazing initiative that brings people from all over to eat fabulous food from local businesses. Situated in the lovely Franklin Square Street Eats brings amazing food creations into the heart of Hobart along with performers to entertain the masses. Only in the spring and summer months this event takes place so make sure that you keep an eye out on their Facebook page for the announcement for season 2 of Street Eats.
