Silver Words || what's on in hobart

On Thursday 27th I attended the April showing of Silver Words, a poetry and short story night for aspiring writers, poets and all those with a love for the literary language. Created by Adonis Storr and currently run by Tom Burdick and Chloe Smyth, Silver Words gives anyone who wants it, a voice and an opportunity to share their passion for writing or poetry.

Silver Words is hosted at the Quartermasters Arms in Elizabeth Street. Walking through the door there is an immediate ambience and vibe that is relaxed and friendly. You can order drinks and food as you walk in the door and then head up an old wooden staircase that leads to the mess hall. The name is deceiving as the hall is more like a small room, sectioned off by a door from another room. Music and laughter are the background noise heard as you walk in. Red curtains hang over the windows and lamps are dotted around the room to make it feel warm and inviting. Though the room may lack space, everyone is willing to squeeze in to watch the performers (including a few dogs that enjoy the attention they receive from the Silver Words crowd).

I was lucky enough to get there early and snag a spot on one of the couches towards the back of the room, sharing it with two others, Suzy and Richard. Both were very friendly and chatted away, with Suzy voicing it was her first time reading what she had written. As the room started to fill, I was introduced to the regulars of Silver Words who praised it, saying it was a fantastic opportunity and a welcoming space to share their work.

The event itself flows quite nicely, with the atmosphere open and friendly. Both Chloe and Tom talk between each performer, praising them on the parts done well and often bantering with each other. The order in which each performer goes is thought out so there are contrasting pieces to keep the audience interested. Tom Burdick said the place is filled with "colourful characters" and that was apparent within the work presented. There was something for everyone the night I went to Silver Words. I found that such a diverse group of people produces an equally diverse range of pieces though at times a microphone would have been a good idea for the people at the back to be able to hear better.

The night was even more enjoyable with a Skype appearance from the original creator of Silver Words, Adonis Storr. He was promoting his new book "A Person Is A Universe", which I have purchased and am currently waiting on my copy to arrive. He read a few of his pieces to the audience and it is clear he has talent, along with all those who read during the night.

I urge everyone interested in any way with the written and spoken word to attend Silver Words as soon as possible. The community is inviting and friendly and although the space may be a little cramped, it is unique and warm. Everyone chats and shares their work, knowing it is a safe environment. It is unfortunate the event only occurs once every month as it is a brilliant opportunity and night to attend. The next Silver Words night is the 25th of May and I highly recommend anyone interested to attend.
